The Visual Confirmation code has been backported from phpBB 2.2 into 2.0 and made avaliable in the default download. You can find it in visual_confirmation.zip in the /contrib/ directory/folder of the default download of phpBB 2.0.x.
This MOD gives administrators the option to enable an additional check upon registration that aids in the prevention of spam bot attacks, by requiring the user to enter the letter/number combination displayed in an image.
How To Install
For default installations, this is extremely straight forward. Simply unzip the contents of visual_confirm.zip. You will then have 3 dirs: admin, includes & templates, as well as one file: profile.php. Simply upload these to the phpBB dir on your webserver (in the same manner that you uploaded the phpBB2/ dir itself - details on that can be found elsewhere, as they are beyond the scope of this document). These files and directories will already exist on the webserver. Simply overwrite the existing versions with the ones from the visual confirmation zip file.
Now all you need to do is visit the "Configuration" menu of the admin panel and turn the visual confirmation option on.
Disclaimer
However, this is the extent for support of this MOD. It is provided 'as is', and if this goes wrong, you're on your own. This MOD will not work on already modded forums that have edited the files that are replaced by the visual confirmation MOD here. In that case, I suggest using the anti-robotic-registration MOD, and manually updating the code.
If the image does not appear, though everything else works, you will need to ensure that your host has zlib support compiled into PHP.
Additional Blurb
As a side note to those worried about visually impared people registering on your forums, this MOD does provide an "email the administrator" link for those that are having troubles with it, so you may manually assist them. |
